Unit Categories Module

Overview

The Unit Categories module is your organizational system for medical measurement units. Think of it as creating folders for different types of measurements used in healthcare. This module helps you group related units together (like all weight measurements, all length measurements, etc.) making it easier to manage, convert, and use units consistently throughout your medical system.

  1. Look for the Medical Records section in your left sidebar menu
  2. Click on Unit Categories
  3. You'll see a list of all unit categories in your system

Understanding Unit Categories

What are Unit Categories?

Unit Categories are groups that organize related measurement units. They help you:

  • Organize units logically: Group similar measurements together
  • Simplify selection: Make it easier to find the right unit
  • Support conversions: Enable conversions within the same category
  • Maintain consistency: Ensure standardized measurements across your system

Why Use Unit Categories?

  • Clinical accuracy: Ensure correct units for medical measurements
  • Data consistency: Standardize how measurements are recorded
  • Conversion support: Enable automatic unit conversions
  • User experience: Make unit selection intuitive for staff
  • System efficiency: Cache frequently used unit data for faster performance

Need Help?

Quick Tips for Success:

  • Plan before creating: Map out needed categories first
  • Use clear names: Make categories self-explanatory
  • Assign units thoughtfully: Only include relevant units
  • Keep active categories minimal: Only activate when ready
  • Regular maintenance: Review categories quarterly
  • Use cache clearing wisely: Only when data appears incorrect

Common Questions:

Q: Can a unit belong to multiple categories? A: Technically possible, but typically not recommended for clarity

Q: What happens if I delete a category? A: Better to mark inactive; deletion may affect historical data

Q: How many categories should I create? A: Start with essentials (8-10), add as needed for specialization

Q: Who should manage unit categories? A: Typically system administrators or clinical informatics staff

Q: Why is cache management important? A: Ensures system performance while maintaining data accuracy
